Chennai Super Kings Break Losing Streak
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 14: Captain MS Dhoni showcased his leadership skills as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a crucial five-wicket victory against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday.
Dhoni remained unbeaten with a quickfire 26 off 11 balls, including four boundaries and a six, while Shivam Dube contributed a solid 43 not out from 37 deliveries, helping CSK clinch the win with three balls to spare.
The chase for 167 runs began with an explosive opening partnership between IPL newcomer Shaik Rasheed and Rachin Ravindra. The young Kiwi batsman set the pace with consecutive boundaries off Shardul Thakur in the first over.
Rasheed displayed his boundary-hitting prowess, finding his first IPL four with a perfectly timed flick. He ended the over with back-to-back boundaries, establishing a strong rhythm for the chase.
The pair built a solid 52-run opening stand before Rasheed (27) fell to Avesh Khan, who cleverly lured the young batsman into a mistake.
In his 100th IPL match, Rahul Tripathi was fortunate to remain at the crease after Abdul Samad dropped a catch. However, Aiden Markram dismissed Ravindra for 37 runs, shifting the momentum back to LSG.
CSK faced another setback when Tripathi (9) returned to the pavilion after a simple catch to Ravi Bishnoi.
Shivam Dube attempted to stabilize the innings alongside Ravindra Jadeja, but Bishnoi struck again, dismissing Jadeja before he could make a significant impact.
Vijay Shankar also failed to contribute much before Dhoni stepped in to guide his team to victory, receiving a warm welcome from the crowd.
Dhoni began to accelerate the scoring with two boundaries in the 16th over and finished the over with a spectacular one-handed six.
With 24 runs needed from 12 balls, Dube launched an aggressive attack in the penultimate over, targeting Shardul Thakur effectively.
LSG's troubles compounded when Bishnoi dropped a catch that could have sent Dhoni back to the dugout. Dhoni capitalized on this mistake, hitting a four in the final over to seal the win.
Earlier, LSG struggled after being put to bat first. Khaleel Ahmed struck early, dismissing opener Aiden Markram for just six runs, courtesy of a brilliant catch by Rahul Tripathi.
CSK continued to apply pressure, with Anshul Kambhoj taking the crucial wicket of Nicholas Pooran for eight runs, leaving LSG at 23/2.
Mitchell Marsh and captain Rishabh Pant attempted to rebuild the innings, reaching 42/2 at the end of six overs.
LSG crossed the 50-run mark with a six from Pant, but their partnership ended when Jadeja bowled Marsh for 30 runs.
Ayush Badoni joined Pant, and they managed to push the score past 100 runs, but Badoni was stumped by Dhoni after scoring 22 runs.
Pant eventually reached his fifty, scoring 63 runs off 49 balls, but LSG concluded their innings at 166/7, with Pathirana taking the final wicket of Shardul Thakur.
